My roof is not damaged but it leaks in certain storms. Why?
Almost certainly wind-driven rain, which is the classic lakeshore problem. When wind arrives off the lake with real force, rain no longer simply runs downhill — it gets driven sideways and upward, under shingle courses and behind flashing that handles ordinary rain perfectly well. The fix is in the details: how far up the wall the step flashing goes, how the counter-flashing is set, and often supplementary underlayment in the exposed areas.
We converted a cottage to year-round. What should we check?
The ventilation path above the insulation, first and foremost. Cottages were built for a season when nobody was heating them through a Michigan winter, and when insulation gets added later it is very often packed straight against the roof deck with no channel left for air. That gives you a warm deck, a melting snowpack and ice dams every year regardless of how good the shingles are. It is fixable, but it is fixed at re-roof time, not after.
Is cedar a mistake this close to the water?
Not a mistake — a commitment. Cedar in a damp lakeside microclimate needs to be installed over a ventilated assembly so it can dry from both faces, and it needs actual maintenance. Done that way it performs beautifully and suits the architecture. Installed tight to the deck and forgotten, it will disappoint you faster here than almost anywhere else in the state.
