Storm damage is a different job from an ordinary re-roof. Hail damage is often invisible from the ground, wind damage can look minor until the next rain, and the repair usually runs through an insurance claim, which means documentation matters as much as the shingles.
The roofer who starts your claim should be the one who finishes the roof and is still around to honor the warranty next winter. That's why every company on this list has a West Michigan address you can drive to.
We looked for roofers that inspect and document storm damage, say on their own websites that they help with the insurance side, and have a local office. Nobody on this list can promise what your insurer will pay, and you should be wary of anyone who does.

Its residential services include storm damage restoration, roof replacement, repair and metal roofs. A company with more than a century in the business is about as far from a storm chaser as it gets.

What to Do in the First Few Days
01. Make sure everyone is safe
If you smell gas, see a sagging ceiling or spot downed lines, get out and call 911 or the utility. Stay off the roof. A wet, damaged roof is one of the most dangerous places to stand.
02. Limit the water damage from inside
Move furniture and electronics away from drips, set out buckets and check the attic with a flashlight. Most homeowners policies expect you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage.
03. Photograph everything
Take dated photos from the ground of the roof, dented gutters and downspouts, damaged siding and screens, and every interior stain. Keep any torn shingles or debris until they're photographed.
04. Get an inspection before you decide on a claim
Hail damage is often invisible from the driveway. A local roofer should tell you what the storm did, what was already wear, and whether the damage is likely to exceed your deductible.
05. Call your insurer if you're filing
Policies set notice requirements, so report the claim promptly. Ask for your deductible, whether you have replacement cost or actual cash value coverage, and your claim number.
06. Be there for the adjuster
Have your roofer on the roof with the adjuster if you can. Then read the adjuster's scope line by line against your roofer's. If items are missing, ask for a review in writing.
How to Spot a Storm Chaser
After a big storm, crews from other states follow the weather into West Michigan. Some do fine work. Many sell hard, roof fast and are gone before the first warranty call. A few warning signs:
- They knock on your door within days of the storm and tell you your roof is "totaled" before anyone has been on it.
- They push you to sign something today, even if they call it an inspection agreement or an authorization.
- They offer to "take care of" your deductible. Your deductible is your share under the policy, and an offer to make it disappear is a red flag.
- Their truck has out-of-state plates and they can't give you a local street address you could drive to.
- They can't show a Michigan residential builder license. You can look any contractor up with the state's Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).
- They want a large payment up front, before materials arrive.

How do I know if hail damaged my roof?
Often you can't tell from the ground. Real hail damage is a fractured shingle mat, found by hand on the roof, and it may not leak for months. The best clue from the yard is dents in soft metal: gutters, downspouts, vents and window screens. If those are dented, have the roof inspected.
Should I file an insurance claim or just pay for the repair?
It depends on the damage and your deductible. If the repair cost lands near the deductible, a claim may gain you little. If hail or wind damaged much of the roof, that's what the policy is for. Get an honest inspection first, then decide.
Can I tarp the roof myself?
We don't recommend it. Climbing a wet, damaged roof is dangerous, and a tarp installed wrong can catch the wind, tear off more shingles and punch new holes in good roofing. Do what you safely can inside and call a roofer for the roof.
How soon should I have my roof inspected after a storm?
As soon as it's safe and a roofer can get there. Damage that isn't leaking yet can still let water in over the following months, and insurance policies set notice requirements for claims. An early inspection gives you photos from right after the storm and time to decide.
