Repairing Wind-Lifted and Torn Roofing
West Michigan roofs take a beating. Spring and fall wind events, summer downbursts, and lake-effect gusts all put uplift on shingles. When the seal between courses is intact and the nails are where they belong, the roof holds. When a seal never bonded, from a cold-weather install nobody hand-sealed, or a nail was driven too high to hold, the wind finds it. That shingle flaps, creases, and eventually tears free, and even one missing shingle exposes the deck.
Wind damage is deceptive. From the ground a roof can look fine while shingles are lifted and unsealed, or while flashing has been pried up along a chimney or valley. A crease across a tab means it was lifted and folded back and it's not sealed anymore even if it's lying flat again. That's exactly where the next rain finds its way in. We find and fix this before a minor repair turns into water damage, rotted decking, and mold. And we look at the seal and the nailing on the shingles that stayed, because if the roof has a pattern problem, replacing the ones that blew off is a repair that comes back next storm.

Wind Damage We Repair
Wind damage rarely stops at a shingle or two. We repair every wind-affected component so the roof works as one system again.
Lifted and Creased Shingles
Gusts break the seal and fold tabs back on themselves. We re-seal, re-nail, or replace creased shingles before the next rain drives water underneath. A creased shingle is a failed shingle even if it lies flat.
Missing and Blown-Off Shingles
When shingles are gone, the deck and underlayment are exposed. We color-match and replace them, and we check the seal and nailing on the surrounding courses so the new ones don't go next.
Torn or Displaced Flashing
Wind pries up flashing around chimneys, valleys, and sidewalls, a leading hidden leak point. We reset, re-seal, or replace it, and if it was reused or surface-mounted to begin with, we rebuild it right.
Ridge Cap and Ridge Vent Damage
The ridge takes the brunt of straight-line wind. We repair or replace ridge caps and ridge vents to close the most exposed line on the roof.
Debris and Impact Damage
Fallen limbs and wind-driven debris puncture and tear shingles. We repair the impact points and check the deck below for damage.

Wind loosens edge metal, fascia, and gutters. We refasten and seal them so water keeps moving off the roof.

We inspect the roof, the attic, and the edge details, and photo-document every point of wind damage, including the pieces you can't see from the ground. We lift tabs by hand on each slope to check the seal. Our inspectors are Haag Certified, and that's the inspection an adjuster will want to see.

Emergency Tarp If Needed
If the roof is open to the weather, we tarp or temporarily patch it to stop water from getting inside. Call or text any hour. For an active leak we usually get out within 24 hours, weather and safety permitting.

Insurance Documentation
We prepare a written report with photos and measurements, and we meet your adjuster on the roof to walk through what we found. We don't negotiate your claim. That's between you and your carrier. But we make sure the adjuster is looking at everything.
- Step 4
Permanent Repair
We replace damaged shingles, reset flashing, and re-seal the roof so it sheds water and holds through the next storm. And we tell you if the roof has a seal or nailing problem across the field, because that's a conversation about the whole roof, not the section.

Every repair starts at $500. That's the minimum, and it's what it costs to put a W-2 tradesman with health insurance and a 401k, in a truck full of tools, at your house and back, with the office and equipment behind him, on a business that pays bills twelve months a year and can work eight. An emergency tarp visit falls under the minimum too, and it's usually credited toward the permanent repair.
- Minor repairs: $500 to about $1,500. A few lifted or missing shingles, re-sealed and re-nailed. A ridge cap. A small flashing reset.
- Moderate repairs: about $1,500 to $4,000. A shingle section across a slope, flashing rebuilt, ridge cap and vent work, some underlayment.
- Major repairs: $4,000 and up. A large blown-off area with deck and underlayment work, or a roof where the inspection shows shingles across the field that never sealed, which is a replacement conversation.

How much wind does it take to damage a roof in West Michigan?
Less than you'd think, and not for the reason you'd think. Modern shingles are rated to 150 mph under ASTM D7158 Class H, and independent testing by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety found properly sealed shingles holding past 120 mph. West Michigan gusts run 45 to 60. So when shingles come off, it's almost never the wind exceeding the shingle. It's a seal that never bonded, nails driven wrong, or a roof old enough that the sealant has given up. Those are the things we look for.
Is wind damage covered by homeowners insurance?
In most cases, yes. Wind is a covered peril on most Michigan homeowners policies, so a sudden storm that lifts or removes shingles is typically claimable, and you generally pay only your deductible. Coverage and the claim deadline are set by your policy, so read it. Our Haag Certified inspectors document the damage and meet your adjuster on the roof.
How soon should I repair wind damage?
As soon as possible. A single lifted or missing shingle exposes the deck, and one more rain turns a cheap repair into interior damage, rotted sheathing, and mold. Can you repair just the damaged area, or do I need a whole new roof?
In most cases we repair the wind-damaged section, replacing lost shingles, resetting flashing, and re-sealing. A full replacement is only recommended when damage is widespread, the roof is near the end of its life, or the inspection shows the shingles across the roof never sealed, because then the same thing keeps happening. We give you the answer after inspecting it.
Will the new shingles match my existing roof?
We color-match and profile-match as closely as possible. On newer roofs the match is usually excellent. On older roofs the surrounding shingles have weathered, so a small difference may be visible up close, though it blends from the street. If the match matters to you and the roof is older, we can pull donor shingles from a hidden slope. We tell you what to expect before we start.
