A Missing Shingle Won't Wait
Shingles are your roof's outer layer. When one is gone, the underlayment beneath it is left to face West Michigan weather alone, and that felt or synthetic layer was never meant to be the last line of defense. A few weeks of lake-effect rain, wind-driven snow, or a freeze-thaw cycle is often all it takes for water to find the deck.
Wind is what takes the shingle off. It's almost never why. A properly sealed and nailed shingle is rated for wind far above anything West Michigan gets. When one comes off at 50 mph, the wind found a seal that never activated, usually from a cold-weather install nobody hand-sealed, or a nail driven too high to hold. Once that shingle goes, the exposed edge of its neighbors becomes the next place for the wind to grab. That's why a small bare spot after one storm becomes a peeled-back section by the next.

How We Repair Missing Shingles
A proper shingle repair is more than slapping a new tab in the gap.
- Step 1
Inspect and Document
We get on the roof, count the missing and lifted shingles, and check the surrounding field for creased or lifted tabs the wind loosened but didn't take. A crease across a tab means it's not sealed anymore even if it's lying flat. We photograph everything, which matters if a storm claim is involved.
- Step 2
Figure Out Why
Before we replace anything, we look at the seal and the nailing on the shingles that came off and the ones around them. If the seal never bonded or the nails are high, the roof has a pattern problem, and we tell you that. Replacing one shingle on a roof full of unsealed ones is a repair that comes back next storm.
- Step 3
Check the Deck and Underlayment
A shingle blows off and the underlayment underneath is exposed to rain and snow. We confirm the deck is dry and sound before anything new goes down. If it's been open long enough to soak the deck, that gets fixed too.
- Step 4
Match the Shingle
We identify the brand, line, and color, then source the closest match. If the match matters to you and the roof is older, we can pull donor shingles from a hidden slope and patch that slope with new ones, so the visible repair blends and the mismatch is somewhere nobody sees. It's more labor. It's worth it on some roofs.
- Step 5
Replace and Re-Seal
New shingles are nailed to spec, in the nail line, flush. If it's cold and the factory seal won't activate, we hand-seal them. Then we tie them back into the existing course so water sheds properly, and we re-seal any lifted tabs nearby.
Making the Repair Disappear, or Not
The hardest part of a shingle repair isn't the labor. It's the match. Shingles fade under years of sun and weather, so a brand-new shingle next to a ten-year-old roof can stand out.
How we handle it:
- Identify the exact manufacturer, product line, and color
- Source current-production shingles from the closest match
- Pull donor shingles from a hidden slope on older roofs when the match matters
- Blend new shingles into a weathered field rather than clustering them
- Keep leftover bundles from your original install on file when you have them
And sometimes the honest answer is that a perfect match isn't worth it. We rebuilt the flashing on a chimney where the closest shingle we could get didn't match, and we told the homeowner that before we installed a single one. They approved it, because they're replacing the whole roof in about five years and a color match on a five-year fix wasn't worth the wait or the money. It's in our gallery. What We Replace

Architectural Asphalt Shingles
The most common roof in Grand Rapids, Holland, and the lakeshore. We match dimensional shingles by manufacturer and color line so the repair blends into the field.
3-Tab Shingles
Older homes and rentals often have flat 3-tab. Simpler to match, but more prone to wind loss, and if we see a pattern of failures we'll flag it.
Ridge Cap and Starter Course
Ridge caps and starter strips take the brunt of the wind. Missing caps are a common, quick fix that prevents leaks along the peak.
Underlayment and Ice and Water Shield
If a shingle has been gone long enough to expose the deck, we renew the underlayment and add ice and water shield at eaves and valleys where it matters.
What Does Missing Shingle Repair Cost?
We price repairs in three tiers, and we'll tell you how they work.
Every repair starts at $500. That's the minimum, and it's not a number we picked. It's what it costs to put a W-2 tradesman with health insurance and a 401k, in a truck carrying tens of thousands of dollars in tools, at your house and back, with the office and equipment behind him. We pay those bills twelve months a year and can work maybe eight of them. That's what the rate is built on. Because the minimum covers the trip either way, a lot of homeowners pair a small shingle fix with a maintenance visit and get the whole roof looked at while we're up there.
- Minor repairs: $500 to about $1,500. A few missing shingles, a ridge cap, a small section on one slope. Match, replace, re-seal the surrounding tabs.
- Moderate repairs: about $1,500 to $4,000. Wind or storm damage across a slope, with underlayment and possibly deck work. Often an insurance claim. Our inspectors are Haag Certified in wind and hail damage.
- Major repairs and replacement: $4,000 and up. Widespread loss on an aging roof, or a roof full of shingles that never sealed. At that point spot repair isn't cost-effective, and we'll say so.
Those are ranges. Your number depends on how many shingles are gone, roof pitch and height, and whether the deck below was damaged, and we can't see that from the phone. Spot Repair or Re-Roof?
A missing shingle doesn't automatically mean a new roof. Often it's a quick, contained fix. Sometimes it's the first sign of a roof that's worn out or was never sealed. Here's how we decide.
A spot repair makes sense when:
- Only a few shingles are missing or damaged
- The roof is under about 15 years old
- The seal and nailing on the surrounding shingles are sound
- The deck and underlayment are dry
- A close color match is available, or you're fine without one
Consider a full replacement when:
- Shingles are dropping across multiple slopes
- The roof is 20 or more years old with heavy granule loss
- You're seeing curling, cracking, and brittleness
- The shingles across the roof never sealed, and it's going to keep happening
- The shingle is discontinued and can't be matched, and the match matters to you

Why do shingles keep blowing off my roof?
Because something's wrong with the seal or the nailing, not because the wind is unusual. A properly installed shingle holds up to West Michigan wind. Repeated blow-offs almost always mean the shingles never bonded when they were installed, usually a cold-weather job that wasn't hand-sealed, or the nails are high, or the shingles are old and the sealant has given up.
